On the 7th Day of Christmas
So, for Christmas I got a super advent calendar (a calendar that counts down the 24 days from Dec 1st - Christmas day) from Verena.
Every day I get a present from her, all nicely wrapped with a bow!
So.... in true musical style
"On the 1st day of Christmas my true love gave to me a home made cookie
On the 2nd day of Christmas my true love gave to me a potato (OK!)
On the 3rd day of Christmas my true love gave to me a personal made musical CD!
On the 4th Day of Christmas my true love gave to me a packet of Earl Grey Tea
On the 5th day of Christmas my true love gave to me a kiss and a secret note (Ohhh!)
On the 6th day of Christmas my true love gave to me some biscuits
On the 7th day of Christmas my true love gave to me a photograph"

Pre-Christmas Break in Amsterdam
So after the Global IS meeting I was lucky to have 5 days in Amsterdam with Verena and later Gudrun! (Click to read her account)
It was a super week... great to be back in Europe: the cold, the rain, the dark evenings, the beer, the food, the Christmas lights, it even snowed as we left! Just Europe really.
Amsterdam is a very international city (many different foods and a true cultural feel to the city!). A true "sin city" with the Red Light District (as much as tourist attraction as a serious enterprise) the coffee shops, sex museums and torture chambers and others.
Then there's the Anne Frank House, Van Gough Museum (and many other museums of classic art), many theatres, romantic canals (the whole city is on canals). We visited most and also the Heiniken experience (true value for money, considering the free beer you get!)
Surely the most diverse city I have ever visited and even in Mid November it was packed with tourists (many British) enabling me to hear some English dialect and get a proper pint (or two) of ale. But there was also many Brazilian bars, which Verena liked (Caipirinha is her folly!)
Many happy memories... great for a romantic break or a beer holiday or maybe even more eventful!
Rules of Amsterdam -
Respect the bikes: they rule the roads, footpaths and canals
Take an umbrella: it will rain
Speak English: everyone else does!
Book early: all the hotels and hostels book up well in advance... even "out of season".

Rotterdam, IS is not just for techno geeks
"What? But your a People Development person who doesn't even know how to read HTML! Man, you don't even have a mobile phone, so what are you doing at the Global IS (information systems) meeting?"
That was some response to the fact that I was attending the Global IS meeting, in Rotterdam (AIESEC International HQ) Nov. 18-21.
But the mandate to recommend the ideal state of IS for AIESEC is too important to be left to IS people (of which AIESEC ashamedly has very few!). It was time that I stretched my strategic awareness to new dimensions of organisational systems and also time to get PD firmly at the centre of global IS strategy! That was my personal learning and how I felt that I might be able to contribute.
The meeting went very well, I really enjoyed the working environment of the AI office with the AI people and the rest of the strategy team (including 5 other country representatives). The discussions to create the "ideal" IS for AIESEC was very exciting and to see the strategic development of the 2010 statement as we see it start to be implemented across the network. Seeing many different country views on issues. Seeing a different strategic approach (CapGemeni Integrated Architecture Framework). Understanding more on the market and history of IS and technology from alumni. Seeing so many short cricket games in the AI office.
Besides that staying in Rotterdam and going running in the very cold mornings. Having team dinners in the evening and pretending to be head of HR phoning the AI global partnerships manager, Veronica, to complain about a trainee who vanished from work and the police are involved etc. (It was a joke for her birthday) but she believed it! Very funny for all!
Very useful meeting, saw new things, met new people, interesting discussions. Really enjoyed.
